FAIRY OPAL
Fairy opal is opal embedded in sandstone. It looks like sand with flecks of colour that appear best when it is wet, or when treated using sugar solution and heat. After treatment, the sandstone becomes dark, highlighting the colour. The treatment is permanent. It is difficult to polish because of the coarse nature of the sandstone.
