Honduran Opal Information

Honduran Opals are a variety of milky-white to matrix-based opals, formed mostly by volcanic eruptions in South America.

Honduras has some of the oldest opal mines in the world, including the most famous one, Tablon. In fact, many farms subsidize their income from opal mining. The opal mines are found in volcanic black basalt, which is why Honduras Black Matrix opals are naturally black. Some are later soaked in resin, similar to the method for treating emeralds.

Meanwhile, the black matrix opal is not totally an ordinary opal; its mixed combination can disturb opal cutters who are quite familiar with the glass kind of opal. Ordinary opal is perceptive with enough temperature which keeps the gem from rapidly overheating while working with it.
