An Opal Triplet is so named because it has three components: a thin slice of crystal Opal sandwiched between a clear top layer and a black backing. The top layer is normally quartz or glass while the backing can be Black potch or man made resin.
Opal Triplets are cut with a very thin wire blade. The cutting machine has a metal block about 4 inches long with approximately 100 fine cutting wires which are extremely thin.
The black backing greatly enhances the fire colour of the Opal layer, while the clear top protects the Opal. For this reason, gem Opal Triplets make good ring stones. They can last 20 years with just an occasional polish by a jeweler. It is not recommended that gem Opal Triplets get wet, so you’ll want to wear gloves when washing dishes.
Opal Triplet jewelry offers the brilliant colour of a solid Opal at only a fraction of the cost. Many triplets feature stunning fire colours and patterns.
Many people ask how long will a triplet opal last in a ring. We always recommend a buyer does not keep the ring on while washing the dishes or going swimming as over time the glue may give way and the Opal layer may loose its sheen. With a little bit of care your Opal triplet jewelry will last for years. We have seen many over the years that have been worn every day in great condition.
Opal Triplets are just as strong as a solid opal but because they have been ‘glued’ together with a backing piece of Ironstone it is important not to clean your piece of jewelry with ultrasonic cleaners or strong chemicals. Simply wipe over with a damp cloth.
