 "GONDAR"  FIELD OPAL ETHIOPIA

This natural untreated specimen is  from a stunning new find in the Gondar area of Ethiopia. This specimen is called hydrophane as it changes colour from white base to crystal when emersed in water .We have taken the photos dry  and wet to show the difference. The wet specimen is placed on a black backing which gives a real kick to the colour

Always let the stone dry out slowerly-do not place under  strong  hot lights.

We have rubbed parts down genlty on a 600 rubber wheel so there are no visible scratch marks.

The opal is not as hard as Australian material as you can feel that it is softer when rubbing it down..There is not much history to this opal but it feels healthy. The chocolate variety has been around for app 15 years and is well known. As with any opal field world wide there are different behaviours of the stone from different area even in the one claim-all miners know this.It appears to be formed by  a sedimentary process unlike the other Ethiopian opal which is from Rhylotic Nodulars and can have a lot of matrix around it.This opal can be cut in to a stone or it be be  kept it in a specimen jar with water and admire its stunning brightness which is brilliant 5/5.For tips on cutting this stone go to  the OPAL FORUM section on the front page-Then go to CUTTING OPAL and you will see CUTTING /STABILIZING ETHIOPIAN OPAL.

Welcome to the colorful journey of Paul Sedawie, a lifelong enthusiast of opals. Paul's fascination with these gemstones began at the tender age of 14 when he acquired his first boulder rough. Entranced by their natural beauty and vibrant colors, Paul embarked on a remarkable adventure in 1989, moving to Lightning Ridge to own an opal claim. Despite the challenges of mining, the experience bestowed upon him priceless memories and a deep respect for the craft. Today, Paul's journey has evolved, transitioning from mining to curating exquisite opals from partnerships and miners worldwide. With a keen eye for quality, he meticulously oversees the cutting process, personally crafting the finest black opals. Together with his sons, Peter and Ross, Paul continues to share his passion for opals with customers globally. Ross, a graduate of the AIGS Gem School, spearheads SEO efforts, while Peter manages worldwide dispatch and opal cutting. As a testament to his dedication, Paul celebrates his 30-year milestone in the opal business in 2019, having sold over 100,000 stones and parcels through Opal Auctions. This E-book offers a glimpse into Paul's extraordinary collection, a culmination of decades spent immersed in the opal industry. With a commitment to preserving Australia's opal heritage, Paul cherishes his personal collection of opal fossils, ensuring they remain in their homeland. Join us in experiencing Paul's passion for opals, and discover the enchanting world of these captivating gemstones. Best regards, Paul Sedawie

Why are users outbidding themselves?

When a bid is placed, this is the maximum amount a user is willing to bid for the product. Our system will then automatically bid on that users behalf, incrementally increasing the bid to maintain their position as the highest bidder, up to the specified maximum.

When there is an icon indicating 'Auto Bid,' it means our system is actively placing bids for the user based on their maximum bid. This may appear as if users are outbidding themselves, but it's simply a result of the system updating the bid to reflect the users maximum limit.

Audit

The Opal Sheriff program allows our members to request an audit on any product, which is completed by an independent Gemologist who assesses the accuracy of the item description and pictures.
