Untreated black matrix honduran rough opal from Erandique mines. PICTURES ARE TAKEN WHEN STONES ARE WET. You cannot see the play of colors when the stone is dry or when it is unpolished. I selected in Honduras several kilograms of this exotic kind of opals and I am cutting them in my workshop in Panama. Shine is acceptable, and I left the flaws in a natural state. Black matrix honduran opals need plenty of light to enjoy their fine play of color. Prepare to be mesmerized when you take your gem out into the sun where the colors come to life.
Additionally, black matrix opals don’t have the problems of heat sensitivity that other opals have. While crazing is well known in other varieties, these gems usually do not crack. Nevertheless, you need some precautions with them as with any other gem in the Mohs hardness scale of 5.5 to 6: avoid wearing opals in areas that have a harsh environment.
