Australia has been the worlds number one source of quality opals for over 100 years. It is estimated that 95-97% of all Opals come from the Australian opal fields. Today there are huge deposits of opal mined in Ethiopia and even old Hungarian opal mines have re-opened in Slovakia. However Australian opals are highly regarded as the best opals in the world. From Boulder Opal to Coober Pedy Opals to the world famous Black opals, Australia has them all.

We will explore the mian fields in Australia that have produced the most amount fo Opal. They Are:

New South Wales - Home of the Black Opal
Queensland - Famous for Boulder Opal
South Australia - The first area in Australia where precious Opal was discovered.

NEW SOUTH WALES OPAL FIELDS

This is the home of the famous black Opal and makes up just one of the New South Wales opal fields. The rarest and most sought after Australian opal is black Opal especially a red fire Harlequin pattern which is every opal owners dream. An opal miner might be lucky to find one in his lifetime as they are so rare.

Black opals are graded by the body tone chart with N1 the darkest body tone and these opals are getting harder to find. In the past a lot opals came from Cochran opal fields and these were nobbies. They displayed deep fire colours and body tone.

Now most opals are seam opal and not as deep in body colour. These stones are rated as N2, N3 or N4. If the opal is softer in colour and it looks grey than it is not considered a black opal.

Many fine crystal opals and some shell fossil opals are found at Lightning Ridge but production has been down last few years. There are only few open cut mines in Lightning Ridge. Most of the working mines are 1-2 man operations digging underground with hand tools.

There is also a very small pocket of volcanic opal found in a place called Tintenbar. these opals are extremely rare and have incredible flashes of fire.

QUEENSLAND OPAL FIELDS

The Australian opal fields in Queensland are spread over thousands of miles in central Queensland. Fully faced colored boulder opal is found from Winton, through Quilpie and down to Jundah.

This opal has sandstone back formed naturally ironstone with displays or veins of colour are found in large rocks or pancakes and heavy moving equipment is used from massive bulldozers to excavators.

Boulder opal from Yowah to Koroit is deep ironstone with traces or veins of colour and beautiful patterns which makes these opals popular. They are less expensive than Lightning Ridge opal but each one is so unique.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN OPAL FIELDS

The South Australian opal fields were one of the first areas for opal mining. From Coober Pedy to Andamooka to White Cliffs, each area has its own distinct crystal opal from the famous Olympic opal fields to the semi black opals from Mintabie.

Coober Pedy is a popular tourist town as visitors enjoy sleeping underground in old mines. it is defiantly worth a visit if you are in the area.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA OPAL FIELDS

Opals have been found in the desert region of West Australia. The Williams opal mine at Coolgardie have some beautiful specimens but most were crazed so only for display purpose. Recently opals have been found and some were offered for sale at the recent Tucson Gem show in Arizona

NEUE SÜDWALES OPALFELDER

Dies ist die Heimat des berühmten schwarzen Opals und nur eines der Opalfelder von New South Wales . Der seltenste und begehrteste australische Opal ist schwarzer Opal, besonders ein feuerrotes Harlekinmuster, das jeder Opalbesitzer träumt. Ein Opalbergmann könnte glücklich sein, einen in seinem Leben zu finden, da sie so selten sind.

Schwarze Opale werden durch die Bodyton-Tabelle bewertet, wobei N1 der dunkelste Körpertonus ist und diese Opale werden immer schwerer zu finden. In der Vergangenheit kamen viele Opale aus Cochran Opalfeldern und diese waren Nobbys. Sie zeigten tiefe Brandfarben und Körperfarbe.

Die meisten Opale sind jetzt Opal und nicht so tief in der Körperfarbe. Diese Steine sind als N2, N3 oder N4 eingestuft. Wenn der Opal weicher ist und grau aussieht, wird er nicht als schwarzer Opal betrachtet.

In Lightning Ridge gibt es viele feine Kristallopale und einige Muschelfossilien, aber die Produktion war in den letzten Jahren rückläufig. In Lightning Ridge gibt es nur wenige offene Minen. Die meisten der arbeitenden Minen sind 1-2-Mann-Operationen, die unterirdisch mit Handwerkzeugen graben.

Es gibt auch eine sehr kleine Tasche aus vulkanischem Opal, die an einem Ort namens Tintenbar gefunden wurde. Diese Opale sind extrem selten und haben unglaubliche Feuerblitze.

QUEENSLAND OPALFELDER

Die australischen Opalfelder in Queensland erstrecken sich über Tausende von Meilen im Zentrum von Queensland. Vollgesichtiger farbiger Boulderopal findet man von Winton über Quilpie bis hin zu Jundah.

Dieser Opal hat einen Sandstein, der natürlich aus Eisenstein geformt ist, mit Ausschnitten oder Farbadern, die in großen Steinen oder Pfannkuchen gefunden werden, und schwere bewegliche Ausrüstung wird von massiven Bulldozern bis zu Baggern verwendet.

Boulderopal von Yowah bis Koroit ist ein tiefer Eisenstein mit Spuren oder Adern von Farbe und schönen Mustern, die diese Opale beliebt machen. Sie sind weniger teuer als Lightning Ridge Opal, aber jeder ist so einzigartig.

SÜD AUSTRALISCHE OPALFELDER

Die südaustralischen Opalfelder waren einer der ersten Bereiche für den Opalabbau . Von Coober Pedy über Andamooka bis zu den White Cliffs hat jeder Bereich seinen eigenen Kristallopal von den berühmten olympischen Opalfeldern bis zu den halbschwarzen Opalen von Mintabie.

WESTERN AUSTRALIEN OPALFELDER
