Collectors of Boulder Opal specimens has been one of the fastest growing
segments of the Opal industry with many minerals and specimen displays
increasing dramatically in price over the last decade.
If a deposit of Opal is found and it has good fire and colour then it is
normally cut out as stones and sold. It is hard to find Boulder Opal specimens
with good colour because of this. It is only in recent times that miners have
polished Boulder Opal specimens and sold them.
Boulder Opal with ironstone makes the best display as the piece can be
large in size and with only small amounts of Opal showing. Once polished it
looks spectacular.
Some pieces have veins of colour going into the specimen and these are
popular as you can see fire colour showing on the face and through the veins, bringing
with it a mystery of not knowing whether there is brighter fire colours inside.
Opal Auctions has one Boulder Opal Specimen which weighs over 30 kilos
and has a colour band around the entire edge and shows internal veins. It is so
tempting to cut it open and see if there is more colour inside.
Unlike gemstone minerals and specimens which are carefully and slowly
taken out from earth by hand, Opals are not seem as clearly so many get broken
during the mining process.
