400+ carats lot of Hungarian Tokaj Mountains rough opal from the ‘Monok’ pit. Rare material from Central Europe. This parcel would fit a collector or a reseller. Around 50 pieces, most are specimens, not suitable for cutting. Some, however could be cut into boulder cabs, together with the mother rock (same way as they cut Mexican opals). Mixed parcel, all pieces have some color, about 1/3 of the parcel is CONTRA LUZ opal. Contra luz is a specific type of play of color. Light have to fall through the opal from BEHIND to reveal this kind of color play (=hold it against light, move it up and down until you reach the appropriate angle where the colors become visible).

Some more info about this opal: These pieces come from a small opal ‘mine’ that worked from the early 2000’s to 2010 in the Southern Tokaj Mts region, Hungary, EU. It is a southern type of the same area where the better known Dubnik mines, the oldest opal mines of the Western World are located. Monok opal is different from the Dubnik type, it is something like Mexican opal in characteristics. It fills hollows and crevices in rhyolite host rock, or found inside rhyolite nodules.
