Wayne & I drove to one of the mining towns in Lightning Ridge in 1993. It was the sheepyards in Glengarry about an hour and a half drive from Lightning Ridge. It was raining hard, but we didn’t mind the drive - I thought this trip is exciting as I’ve never been here before.

It wasn’t a real good day to fossick because it was raining but we were determined to get some Opals. Wayne was filling his buckets with so much opal; potch with colour and the rest are just something to play around it. We found this piece of opal rough which showed a slight of colour flash.

I told Wayne I will take this home and cut it myself. It was getting dark and we decided to pack up and leave. As we were heading towards Lightning Ridge, we didn’t realize that the heavy rain has caused so much flooding and turned the roads into a slushy muddy road. I thought no worries Wayne; we’ve got our mobile phones with us we can always ring for help. Wrong!! The mobile phones wouldn’t work.

Wayne was struggling to drive through the mud and slush, the windscreen wiper was on overload, mud was all over our windscreen - couldn’t see a thing and the car was criss-crossing and sliding on the road. The motor was overheating as it was filling up with mud.

Wayne had to stop every 20 minutes, and then I would hop out of the car and clean the windscreen with a towel just so Wayne could see. It was already dark and we were worried. We didn’t tell anyone where we were heading that morning. This was bad! One rule everyone knows is that when you drive out in the bush/outback you’ve got to tell someone. Well, tough luck for us - we didn’t tell anyone.

It was luck that got us through the horrible drive back. We drove into the petrol station around 8:00 pm and the Manager saw the state of the car and said - where the hell have you been!!!

I couldn’t wait the following morning to find out what that piece of Opal rough we found would bring for us. It was a difficult Opal stone to cut as all I could see was a very thin colour bar. I prepared myself for the challenge. I donned my cutting uniform, tools, and polishing gear. The Opal stone was hard to cut. I could see a glimmer of colour. I had been polishing for one hour to get to the colour bar and looks like the stone is not going to give me nothing.

As I persevered, voila!!! There I was amazed at the bluish/green/orange colour bars - it was magical. The colours glimmered and flashed in front of me - I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was so pleased with myself!!!

Now my dilemma - I want to keep this stone for myself - how to tell Wayne - I want this Stone! Yes, Yes, Yes, he was furious and wanted to sell it as he had buyer wanting this type gem opal, I was allowed to keep it. Our Italian Jeweller friend set it for me. It is set in 18k yellow gold, intricately hand crafted, about half an inch in width. The Opal is bezel set. Opal weighs 15 carats this was the outcome! I love this Opal and I treasure it!

Wayne und ich fuhren 1993 zu einer der Bergbaustädte in Lightning Ridge. Es waren die Schäfereien in Glengarry, ungefähr anderthalb Autostunden von Lightning Ridge entfernt. Es hat heftig geregnet, aber die Fahrt hat uns nichts ausgemacht - ich fand diese Reise aufregend, da ich noch nie hier war.

Es war kein wirklich guter Tag für Fossick, weil es regnete, aber wir waren entschlossen, ein paar Opale zu bekommen. Wayne füllte seine Eimer mit so viel Opal; Potch mit Farbe und der Rest sind nur etwas, um es herumzuspielen. Wir fanden dieses Stück Opal rau, das einen leichten Farbblitz zeigte.

Ich sagte Wayne, ich werde das mit nach Hause nehmen und es selbst schneiden. Es wurde dunkel und wir beschlossen zu packen und zu gehen. Als wir in Richtung Lightning Ridge fuhren, merkten wir nicht, dass der starke Regen so viele Überschwemmungen verursacht hat und verwandelten die Straßen in eine matschige, schlammige Straße. Ich dachte, keine Sorge, Wayne; Wir haben unsere Handys dabei, wir können immer um Hilfe klingeln. Falsch!! Die Handys würden nicht funktionieren.

Wayne hatte Mühe, durch Schlamm und Matsch zu fahren, der Scheibenwischer war überlastet, Schlamm war überall auf unserer Windschutzscheibe - er konnte nichts sehen und das Auto kreuzte sich und rutschte auf der Straße. Der Motor war überhitzt, als er sich mit Schlamm füllte.

Wayne musste alle 20 Minuten anhalten, und dann stieg ich aus dem Auto und reinigte die Windschutzscheibe mit einem Handtuch, damit Wayne sehen konnte. Es war schon dunkel und wir machten uns Sorgen. Wir haben niemandem gesagt, wohin wir an diesem Morgen fahren. Das war schlecht! Eine Regel, die jeder kennt, ist, dass man es jemandem sagen muss, wenn man im Busch / Outback rausfährt. Nun, Pech für uns - wir haben es niemandem erzählt.

Es war ein Glück, das uns durch die schreckliche Rückfahrt brachte. Wir fuhren gegen 20:00 Uhr zur Tankstelle und der Manager sah den Zustand des Autos und sagte - wo zum Teufel bist du gewesen !!!

Ich konnte es am nächsten Morgen kaum erwarten herauszufinden, was das Stück Opal, das wir gefunden hatten, für uns bringen würde. Es war schwierig, einen Opalstein zu schneiden, da ich nur einen sehr dünnen Farbbalken sehen konnte. Ich habe mich auf die Herausforderung vorbereitet. Ich zog meine Schneiduniform, Werkzeuge und Polierausrüstung an. Der Opalstein war schwer zu schneiden. Ich konnte einen Farbschimmer sehen. Ich hatte eine Stunde lang poliert, um zur Farbleiste zu gelangen, und es sieht so aus, als würde mir der Stein nichts geben.

Wie ich durchgehalten habe, voila !!! Dort war ich erstaunt über die bläulich / grün / orange Farbbalken - es war magisch. Die Farben schimmerten und blitzten vor mir auf - ich traute meinen Augen nicht. Ich war so zufrieden mit mir !!!

Nun mein Dilemma - ich möchte diesen Stein für mich behalten - wie ich es Wayne sagen soll - ich möchte diesen Stein! Ja, ja, ja, er war wütend und wollte es verkaufen, da er einen Käufer hatte, der diese Art von Edelsteinopal wollte. Ich durfte es behalten. Unser italienischer Juwelierfreund hat es für mich eingestellt. Es ist in 18 Karat Gelbgold eingefasst, aufwendig handgefertigt und etwa einen halben Zoll breit. Der Opal ist Lünette eingestellt. Opal wiegt 15 Karat das war das Ergebnis! Ich liebe diesen Opal und ich schätze ihn!
