Coober Pedy – The Source
Located in South Australia, Coober Pedy is one of the most famous opal mining regions in the world.
Around 100 million years ago, the area was covered by an inland sea, perfect conditions for marine fossils like clams, belemnites, and even dinosaur bones.
Today, it’s known for producing precious opals and opalised fossils—some of which are museum-grade or even scientifically significant
Fossilised shells (from ancient marine clams) that have been replaced or filled with precious opal over millions of years.
This opalisation process occurs when silica-rich water seeps into the fossil cavities and solidifies over time.
The result is a fossil with brilliant opal colouration, often with play-of-colour in blues, greens, reds, or purples.
