Fragile Black Heart, the aptly-titled pictorial publication, exhibition and documentary by veteran photographer Lucy Di Paolo offers readers and viewers a glimpse into the other-worldly environment of the NSW outback mining town, Lightning Ridge. In this harsh landscape, Lucy follows in her late mother’s footsteps, lured by the beautiful and elusive black opal, discovering a community of like-minded characters who chose to abandon the comforts of the modern urban lifestyle, trading amenities for dust, heat, trials and tribulations. Fragile Black Heart is a collection of stunning photographs and anecdotes, portraying Lightning Ridge’s people honestly and with integrity.
