What is a Triplet Opal?

A Triplet Opal consist of three layers, bonded together: - a black backing - a thin slice of opal in the middle and - a clear glass, quartz, or plastic capping in the shape of a dome, on top.

The slice of opal in a triplet is very thin so the clear capping gives the stone a cabochon (dome) as well as protecting the fine opal layer. The clear capping also magnifies the intensity of the colour and pattern of the opal thus enhancing the overall appearance of the stone.
