I have been cutting the amazing Welo crystal opal from Ethiopia since its fortuitous discovery in late 2008 and so I have seen many examples of Nature’s handiwork. However, this is the first gem of this type that I have seen. Unfortunately my camera was unable to accurately capture the brilliant colors in this truly unique crystal opal; thus, I can state with confidence that in person this radiant gem is significantly better than the photos displayed here.  The top surface of this beautiful stone is resplendent with intense oranges and reds, vivid dots of intense fire. Yet, a slight shift in position and this remarkable pattern segues into a gathering of sparkling greens that will again delight your eyes.  And this is only gem’s the top surface.  Every other highly polished plane has this identical display that changes and plays on and within the transparent body of this gorgeous gem.  Indeed, this is a collector’s stone. It would be a shame to have even gold or platinum cover even the smallest area of this exceptional opal. It is difficult to place a value on a stone of this caliber and quality so I hesitate to speak of it as an investment.  I do know, however, that high quality Welo cutting rough is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain.  Wander around Welo cyberspace for a bit and draw your own conclusion
