I am a long time opal miner, originally commencing mining in Lightning Ridge in 1989.
About 8 years ago I developed a passion for Boulder Opal.
Boulder Opal, sometimes called The Gem of the Never Never, is found exclusively in the Queensland Outback and is amongst the most rare of gemstones.
Hard to find in the rugged and isolated terrain, boulder opal can come in incredible patterns and colours.
And so, lured by the beauty of boulder opal and a love of the outback, I started prospecting in Far Western Queensland.
Luck was on my side and after a few years I found the abandoned Snow’s Mine, west of Eromanga, and in 2018 I commenced mining there
My opal is all mined on The Eromanga Opal Field, located near the edge of Sturt Stoney Desert, more than 1,000 kilometres from both Brisbane and Adelaide.
This makes The Eromanga Field the most isolated mining field in Australia.
The extreme heat of summer restricts mining to the period from April to October, so in summer I take my opal to Bali for cutting and setting.
I never cease to be amazed by the skill and artistry of Balinese stone cutters, carvers and silversmiths.
The Opals offered here on Opal Auctions are the result of my efforts and the skill of the Balinese artisans.

There is a wonderful dreamtime story about opal.
Back in dreamtime two tribes were at war for many years. One day a warrior hurled a stone into the air. As the stone flew higher it became bigger and bigger until it exploded and all the colors of opal appeared. As the sky looked down on the men fighting it wept, and it’s tears took on the colors of the opal, creating the rainbow.
