Welo Opal is mined in the Welo Amhara Regional State
Highland plateau. These mountains are very steep and high, up to 3,200 meters above
the sea level, and make opal mining difficult and dangerous
This opal fields were only discovered in 2008 and has gained
good reputation for quality Ethiopian gem crystal and hydrophane Opal.
Welo opal can change colour to yellow or clear white if left
in water so humid or certain weather conditions can affect the color of this opal.
If you work outside or gardening you will notice a color change
that people in cities would not see.
It’s not a negative aspect but the unique property of hydrophane
opal that is enjoyed by so many opal lovers.
