What is a hydrophane Opal?

Many of the opals mined in Ethiopia, especially from the Welo deposits, are hydrophane opals. "Hydrophane" is a name used for a porous opal that has the ability to absorb water. A change in color or transparency often accompanies the water absorption.

Where do hydrophane opals come from?

Ethiopian opals originate from volcanic activity. Volcanic opal is known as “hydrophane opal”, where the term hydrophane comes from the Greek words meaning “water-loving” which describes the opal's propensity to absorb water and change from opaque to translucent or transparent in humid or aqueous environments.

How can you tell if an opal is hydrophane?

Hydrophane opals are opals that have a higher porosity and will absorb water, when in contact. You can easily spot a hydrophane opal because when placed in water, they will become transparent and their colors subdued.

How do you care for a hydrophane Opal?

Avoid Liquid Chemicals Around Your Ethiopian Opals. Due to the opal's hydrophane nature, liquids like perfumes, soaps and cleaning products can stain your opals and change their colour. If this occurs, try wiping them with a soft, damp cloth before allowing them to dry, naturally, on their own.

Why are Ethiopian opals so cheap?

Contrary to Australian opal, Ethiopian's opal price is generally lower, making it a more affordable gemstone, because of the steady supply, however, high quality Ethiopian opal is still difficult to obtain and can be expensive.

How do you tell if opal is real or fake?

When you view a synthetic opal side-on, its colour structure will present as neatly lined columns, with the pattern appearing in a repeated uniform way through the stone. Genuine opal, when viewed side-on, will appear solid as it is not composed of different layers.

Is an opal rarer than a diamond?

On the whole, opals are rarer than diamonds because there are less high-quality opals available than there are diamonds. The good news is that you can find a gem-quality opal for a great price, especially compared to a diamond.
