A General Note About Opals

If you happen to be new to the world of opals then please know this - only about 10% of all mined opal is gem grade with the rest being colorless potch. If you have ever seen an opal that looked dull with almost no color inside of it then you saw a low quality opal. We are offering much higher quality opals - opals filled with beautiful fire. When you get an opal from Great Opals you are getting an opal that has been hand-selected for its unique characteristics by an opal expert who spends nearly all of his time working with opals.

How Do You Know Which Opal to Buy?

People often want to know how to select an opal and it’s quite simple really. Opals are exceptionally rare and beautiful gemstones. They have fire inside of them that flashes and rolls as you move them about. As the colors flash and roll, it’s almost as if the opal is telling a story. So, as you look at the opal, listen to it. You should buy the opal that “speaks to you.”

Opal Is October’s Birthstone and MUCH MUCH More!!!

Opal is an ancient gem stone. Welo opal was formed in voids created during the East African continental drift during the Oligocene epoch (Cenozoic age) about 30 million years ago. LUCKY YOU. . . after all those years, this new source of beautiful gem opal was discovered by Ethiopian farmers in 2008. All of our opals are ethically sourced from these farmers which supports the local economy and greatly improves their way of life.

Historically, opals were considered to be good luck. It was believed opal, like the rainbow, brought its owner good fortune. To the Romans, opal was considered to be a token of hope and purity. Opal was also referred to as being the “Cupid Stone” because it suggested the clear complexion of the God of Love. The early Greeks believed the opal bestowed powers of foresight and prophecy upon its owner, while in Arabian folklore, it’s said opal fell from heaven in flashes of lightning. The Oriental traditions referred to opal as “the anchor of hope”. Opals are also known to stimulate healing and increase friendship and healthful emotions. They symbolize truth, happiness, hope, and are known to protect the wearer from evil.

About Our Pictures and Videos

When you hold an opal in your hand it should look better in your hand than in the images used to show it - not the other way around. It is never our intention to portray an opal better in our images than it will appear in real life. The images you see are accurate to the best of our digital limitations. Generally, with the opal in hand, you will see higher luster with greater depth and liveliness than the images portray.

You should know it is impossible to express the exact nature of an opal in images. Opals actually refract light (like a rainbow) so they will look different under different sources of light. Make sure to look at the opal with the sun at your back and coming over your shoulder. Not all opals look their best in full sunlight. Some opals look better with less light and some opals look drastically different on cloudy days or in the morning light. I hope you have fun discovering all of the wondrous ways your opal expresses itself.
