Boulder Opal Craving from Budgerigar Mine, Blackhall, QLD. Layers of blue and turquoise opal mixed into the ironstone backing. Natural ironstone makes for a strong and durable stone with vivid slices of interesting pattern and colour visible inside.

BOULDER OPAL Called so because of the large iron ore boulders or nodules that water and silica have poured into over thousands of years to produce opal. Found only in Queensland, it is mostly mined using large excavators, and only 1 in 50 boulders normally produce gem opal (opal with nice fire). Most of our opal comes from Budgerigar mine near Blackhall (far western Queensland). It is mined by Adam’s friend Avon and his family, where Adam picked up most of his new stock in 2015. Australian Boulder opals are the second most valuable type of opal (following black opal). Boulder opals, as the name suggests, are mined from large ironstone boulders under the ground. Thin veins of colourful opal forms in cracks and fissures in these boulders. The thin layer of opal in boulder opals can display any colour of the spectrum in a beautiful play of colour, in this case rich blue, turquoise and translucent yellows are visible, all with great fire.

No adventure is too crazy, no risk is too great, no journey too extreme, when Adam McIntosh sets about sourcing his rare and unusual gems. Born in Scotland and raised in Papua New Guinea, he is renowned for his environmentally sound and ethically created designs. The chief of the Mi'kmaq tribe named Adam 'Two Skies' on one of his many expeditions to places ranging from the dark jungle of the Amazon to the tropical reefs of Fiji. Each piece of his sustainably sourced jewellery comes with its own fascinating story, and can be traced from origin to creation. Adam currently lives in a tree house on an organic farm outside Edinburgh, Scotland.

Why are users outbidding themselves?

When a bid is placed, this is the maximum amount a user is willing to bid for the product. Our system will then automatically bid on that users behalf, incrementally increasing the bid to maintain their position as the highest bidder, up to the specified maximum.

When there is an icon indicating 'Auto Bid,' it means our system is actively placing bids for the user based on their maximum bid. This may appear as if users are outbidding themselves, but it's simply a result of the system updating the bid to reflect the users maximum limit.

Audit

The Opal Sheriff program allows our members to request an audit on any product, which is completed by an independent Gemologist who assesses the accuracy of the item description and pictures.
