This is a beautiful and extremely rare precious Andesite opal from the Las Colinas locality in Honduras, S.A. This small equatorial nation is riddled with all sorts of unusual and unfortunately relatively novel sources of opal. One of the most commonly seen on the market and definitely the most influential in finished jewelry is the Andesite type opal from Las Colinas and the “Gracios O Dios Mine”. This material is a base of hard granite-like rock that has fissures filled with opal through the eons. This opal is generally lightbased and shows very nice color that tends to appear in lines level with the horizon. Usually, this material is left in the rocky matrix as it is cut to show the color best and it also gives much visual interest as well. Andesite opal also appears to be the most stable of the types from Honduras and is such high quality that it was often exported to Europe and sold as the very similar material from the Slovakian deposits. This particular stone is rare precious layered opal with the lines of formation diagonal to the orientation of the finished stone for a lovely designer look. It shows nice pink-red-multicolor fire (think Pepto-Bismol pink-red) throughout. It has been cut and polished with a long beveled form that is perfect for a superb pendant. This opal would make a very unique and special jewel that would be worn proudly and garner many questions and comments, for sure. The metallic sparkles of color in the opal and the very distinct banding of the layers of opal make for a highly unusual and beautiful stone. It is a spectacular example of this sort of rare opal and the palette of colors and the striped look make this one stand out exceptionally. You can see in the photos that there are a couple of wonderful dendritic inclusions in the opal and these are highly desirable in Andesite opal for aesthetic reasons. The Japanese market is especially fond of these gems. The piece weighs about 19.36 WHOPPING carats and measures about 25 mm x 18 mm x 6.3 mm aprx. Andesite opal is very stable and durable with a low water content and one of the hardest and most stable opal types. Very few people have learned to cut this unique opal to this standard and our lapidary has worked to achieve this level of technique and skill in cutting this and many other types of unusual opal. This ExoticOpal is being offered here at under $50 per carat~ just $928~We will gladly consider offers on this or other items we have listed, just use make an offer or message us~Thanks
