This is a natural specimen found in the Andamooka opal fields in South Australia.The area is known for its large quartz/sandstone boulders where the precious opal has field the voides.The rock is hit hard and the opal usually is found on both sides of the rock.The opal has a natural polish from this splitting.Both sides included. The value of this specimen is worked out by the value of how much you would get for the opal stones if you cut it off from the rock

Most painted ladys are found in Andamooka but some are also found in Coober pedy and in Allans rise.The name is meant to come from a old miner who thought beauty is only skin deep like a lady!!
