The Dubnik opal mines are the only place in Europe where precious opal was mined regularly. Documented mining started in the 16th century. Dubnik opals appear in the jewellery of the period European ruling class. Josephine, first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte also had a pendant set with Dubnik opals. The ‘golden age’ of Dubnik opal were the 18th-19th centuries. Mining was left off in 1922.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Matrix opal from the Dubnik mines. Precious opal impregnated andesite mother rock. Polished pieces, some cabochon cuts. These are not gems, suitable for collectors who value the rare locality, specimen grade!!
