The Dubnik opal mines are the only place in Europe where precious opal was mined regularly. Probably ancient romans already owned opals from the locality. Pits were dug there during the middle age, but documented mining started later in the 16th century. Dubnik opals appear in the jewellery of the period European ruling class. Josephine, first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte also had a pendant set with Dubniok opals. The ‘golden age’ of Dubnik opal were the 18th-19th centuries. Mining was left off in 1922 in the chaotic era after WW I.. Today the area belongs to slovakia and the mines are closed and partially flooded by underground streams.
