About this item specifically~
Here is a very rare and unusual "kali maya" opal from the Banten, Java, Indonesia locality. The opal from this locality bears a resemblance to some of the opal from the Welo, Ethiopia locality, but most of it is very difficult to identify unless it was cut from rough. Cutting this material and becoming familiar with both types allows you to see some of the differences that may not be as apparent otherwise. This particular piece is a slightly uneven (zoned) base with a very slight hydrophane tendency similar to Welo opal in the more opaque end. The colorplay is quite good in this piece and it would make a welcome addition of the rare type to any collection. This opal has been in the ExoticOpal collection for about 10 years and has never displayed any signs of instability. Some of this type of opal usually gets acidic carbonized ("pickled") or tea smoked, to deepen the base tone and make the colorplay standout, but as we cut this gem from the original rough, we can attest to its natural base color. (***see note below***) These stones are very rarely on the market and always coveted by opal collectors for their rarity and novelty. It weighs about 2.14 carats and measures about 11.2mm x 9mm x 4.7mm aprx. This ExoticOpal is being offered at under $250 per carat~ just $528~We will gladly consider offers on this or any other items we have listed, just ask.
(Incidentally, treating lighter opals to make them "black" is becoming very common in Welo opals recently. Ebay is currently inundated with gems that purport to be natural "black opals" (some of them even erroneously suggest they are Australian black opals!) In fact, these are treated to give them the black base tone in most cases. It is often done with dyes or chemical color modification as well as carbonizing techniques that create a thin layer of black around the outside in a similar way to treated Andamooka matrix opal, for instance. The GIA has had a significant spike in the quantity of treated Ethiopian opals being submitted for certification, especially non-crystalline "black" Welo opals from Asian sources. OpalAuctions maintains a much higher standard of buyer and seller confidence and is most assuredly the best source for buying authentic and certifiable gems. If you see it somewhere else and it sounds too good to be true, it almost always will be.)
