The Telkibánya opal mine in the Tokaj Mountains was worked in the 18th century - beginning of 19th century. A specific opal called honey opal or ‘telkibanyerstein’ used to be exploited here. It has no play of color at all, hues vary from pale yellow to reddish-brown, clarity from transparent to opaque. The most valued pieces were transparent, with deep honey or amber hue. It was cut into cabs or was faceted. Opal is found in rhyolite host rock, often with a kaolinite cover.
