Mexican Matrix Opal.

The mountains of Mexico are the home of this fascinating opal variety, whose main sites are also the areas around Magdalena and Querétaro. The search for the precious opals has a long tradition there, even the Aztecs dug for the coveted stones and used them for jewelry, in mosaics and for ritual purposes.

In this colorful variety of fire opals, the luminous opal is fused with the surrounding host rock, the matrix, which often consists of reddish-brown ryolite (magmatic stone). Against the backdrop of the inconspicuous host rock, the whole splendor of the Fire Opal stratum unfolds. Their mostly fire-red to orange-yellow basic color reminds us of the glowing volcanoes in which the Mexican fire opals once formed. However, a fire opal matrix can sometimes appear almost transparent, giving us the impression of looking at the bottom of a clear lake through opalescent rainbow colors. Depending on the incidence of light, there is always a different picture. The infinite variety of formations can show shimmering miniature landscapes and magical images that cast a spell over our history. There are no limits to the fantasy of viewing a Fire Opal matrix.
