Mexican Opals

Mexican Opals are formed in white to soft-tone brown potch and are known for their beautiful orange crystals. Mexican Opals make particularly good cabochon opals.

Canterra Matrix Mexican Opals were used in mosaics and rituals by ancient Mayans and Aztecs. They called these fiery opals "quetzalitzlipyollitli," or the bird of paradise. After these ancient civilizations, Canterra Matrix Mexican Opals remained unknown until they were rediscovered in 1835.
