All opal cutters need good cutting equipment, from thin-bladed saws for slicing opal colours open to large, diamond-tipped saw blades for cutting large rocks.

Diamond-tipped opal drills are needed to drill out potch or undulating opal. Many lapidary clubs have cutting and polishing equipment for members to learn opal cutting.
