Doublets

Opal doublets offer the look of higher-quality opals at a fraction of the price. A doublet is composed of two sections, with a thin slice of opal comprising the top portion. Natural opal is fused to a black stone backing, leaving only the color of the opal visible. The backing layer of onyx or matrix (ironstone) supports the more fragile opal layer and can make the opal appear darker and higher-quality. If seen in reflected light, a separation line may be seen.

Source your single-gem or parcel doublet opals direct from opal miners and opal wholesaler/dealers. Black doublet opals are made in Lightning Ridge, Australia using opal crystal and set on natural black opal potch. Most doublets are set on natural ironstone from Queensland Opal Fields.
