Wayne and Estela Sedawie know their opals. From the mining site, to the cutting table and the wholesale business, they’ve accumulated over 18 years experience in the opal and gemstone industry.
In the early days they would source raw opal from a relative who was mining in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, where the worlds’ largest known deposits of black opals are found. Honing their skills in cutting and polishing, Wayne and Estela specialised in black opals and sold to jewellery stores around Perth. Moving to Queensland, they started Opal Plus and began wholesaling opals in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Japan.
The business went to the next level with the discovery of ‘online auctions’. Setting up in their son’s bedroom, Wayne and Estela embarked on a steep learning curve with computer technology and the online world. The move online proved a great success and, using eBay as their auction facility, Opal Plus became the largest online opal seller within a year.
Today Wayne and Estela run OpalAuctions.com which boasts over 60 verified opal sellers from around the world, and 44,000+ auctions each day. It’s one of the largest opal collections online.
