Koroit

Our original opal mine was situated near Koroit about 120 kilometers north west of Cunnamulla.
Opals was discovered in this region in late 1890 and is still mined today .
In 1925 syndicates mined in this area and left till after second world war and started again in 1972 so this area has history of busy activity than a break before another are is found
But now banded ironstone is well regarded for it unique pattern , with veins of colour and cabochon.
Yowah is not far away form Koroit and sometimes parcels trade between the towns .

The Opal is found in small ironstone boulders, thickly embedded in the pipeclay band, varying in thickness from 6 inches to 2 feet.

The gem is found in small ironstone boulders, thickly embedded in the pipeclay. It is in the breaking of these opals, either by a tomahawk, or on the head of a pick, that many stones become flawed and greatly diminished in size, and consequently value.
