The Story Behind Louisiana Opal
Opal from Louisiana is very scarce. Most people are not aware that Louisiana produced any opal which is not surprising since only a limited amount was mined.
About Louisiana Opal: All of the Louisiana Opal came from one very small mine located in Vernon Parish Louisiana. The mine was called Louisiana Opal Exchange Mine, also known as, The Hidden Fire Opal Mine and was operated from 1989-1993. The small scale mining operation was shut down and ever since then no Louisiana Opal has been mined again. To date, this Louisiana opal is the first and only precious opal known to be discovered in Louisiana.
About its formation: Louisiana Opal is a sandstone/quartzite with precious opal cement and matrix. Due to its formation, it is a very solid opal and does not require any treatment or backings to make it stable. There is a little bit of additional information located here: http://www.missgeo.com/delegates.htm
This is a nice piece of what is called "Louisiana Black Christmas Tree Opal." With Louisiana Opal the darker body color is the rarest and red is the rarest color. This piece of rough has both so it is quite desireable. I can see red fire on all exposed surfaces so however you choose to cut this piece there should be skin to skin red fire.

About My Pictures and Videos
I want you to have a very good idea of what you are buying before you buy it. I don't do any editing to my images other than cropping to size. The images that you see are accurate to the best of my ability but there is more color and life in the opals than I capture in my images. So, the opals will be better in hand.
If you are new to opals then you should know that it is impossible to capture the exact nature of an opal in images. Many opals look different under different lighting conditions. Make sure to look at your opal with the sun at your back and coming over your shoulder. Not all opals look best in full sunlight. Some opals look better with less light and some opals look drastically different on cloudy days or in the morning light . I hope you have fun exploring the wonderful world of opal.
A note about my opals: My opals are acquired from the best most direct sources possible. I personally sift and sort through thousands of carats of opals to bring you opals that “stand-out” from the rest. All opals are unique – that is why we love them so much. Uniqueness is matter of degree. The opals you see here are unique to a very high degree.
