Welo Top Grade Cutters

55.5 carats, measuring 33 mm x 26 mm x 17 mm

This piece is part of a very special parcel of top grade brightness, rare body tone and highly geometric patterns of opal rough. All of this group are grades above most of what is offered on the internet anywhere today.

This is a very large piece of white crystal precious opal. Most of this piece is covered in a thin crust. The body tone is white, growing clearer towards the center. The few windows we have show red color and all the various other colors of the rainbow, this opal has full spectrum fire. This is over eleven grams of opal, full fire multicolor opal.

Such a large piece offers many opportunities for cutting that a smaller stone does not present. A series of slices, one to make a pair of high dome cabachons, full of red fire, or more to create a series of perfectly matched opals. A careful cutter could yield a lot of matching opals from this piece. The carver with a Dremel could create a one of a kind carving of great value. It would make a good investment, as we will never again see prices as low as they are now.

Welo opal has hydrophane properties and will absorb water. Wetting it will cause it to gain weight and will affect both the body tone and color display. This rough has not been watered for weight or extra brightness, No treatments of any kind. Pictures are all taken dry, mostly in sunshine or bright overcast. It's been a rainy summer.
