A great deal of the opal from Australia is fossil replacement material.  Shells and other marine fossils are the most common and this particular piece is a fossil piece of ancient squid called a belemnite.  These are generally part or all of the mantle of the animal and usually have little or no colorplay.  There are a few here and there that do exhibit intense opal colorplay but often are riddled with bad sand inclusions and the like that prevent the material being as desirable for gems.  This piece is one of a very elite few that not only shows very intense gem colorplay but it is also extremely clean and it has been left in the shape common to these rare fossils.  It has beautiful bright multicolor fire and it is beautifully cut by the miner in Australia.  The base of the piece is somewhat crystalline with a whitish tone.  It weighs about .9ct and measures about 11mmx5mmx3mm approx.  This rare and beautiful stone would make a super pendant stone or a great investment for the astute collector.  It is yet another great offering from ExoticOpal and can be yours for only $488 obo ~ HURRY!
