About this item specifically~ This piece represents an extremely rare and bizarre phenomenon that occurs sometimes during the formation of opal.  Many of the world's precious opal deposits are formed from the replacement of plant and animal fossil cells with the silicated water which forms the color.  Usually, Virgin Valley produces and area of fossil plant opal that occurs naturally under a layer of volcanic ash that provides the mechanism that forms the opal over time.  This piece is highly unusual because it shows a piece of WOOD that has not been replaced at all by opal (it is still like any old bit of wood)but there are cracks that have opal in them.  We have faced and polished a large "shield" layer of GEMMM stable Virgin Valley crystal opal and it is still firmly and naturally attatched to the wood in which it formed.  This piece is completely dry and very durable so it would be a spectacular "hands-on" specimen or even the coolest pendant you've even seen!  Imagine if the upper portion of the wood were holed for a bail and the piece would suddenly be a pendant anyone would be proud to wear.  These pieces are very unusual but they are unheard-of in the dry state of this one with a large opal area polished to perfection.  This gem weighs about 3.75 carats and measures about 20mmx13.5mmx6.5mm and is priced at a bargain~under $300 per carat~just $988~HURRY~
