About My Opal        (I TAKE PayPal ONLY)

Most of the opal I'll be listing here was obtained in the late '60s and '70s.  I saw an ad in the "Lapidary Journal" from an Old Boy in Adelaide  Australia advertising "Opal Direct from the Mine."  I contacted him and he
said if I send money, he'd send opal.  As I would save a few dollars I'd send money and he sent OPAL, BEAUTIFUL OPAL.
Of couse there was no internet in the '60's so it was "sight unseen" so I decided to trust him with my first bit of savings and his shipment was outstanding, and every other shipment was far above my expectations. I've trusted those Australian opal dealers ever since.
Back then he sent Lightning Ridge and Andamooka Crystal (some was Stunning Investment Quality) and BIG, I like BIG.
YES I do have most of it in some form or another and you'll be seeing it starting with this listing.  Most of this material is now RARE and expensive but I'll list most of it at NO or LOW reserve.
Most of this material has been out of the ground for 30 or 40 years so it's done what its going to do and is now STABLE
I've got enough of this opal that you'll be tired of reading this part, so you can go directly to the description.

HERE'S SOMETHING NEW!! You all are getting a shot at the majority of my PRIVATE COLLECTION that I had planned to keep to myself, but when I dropped and broke my Prize ANDAMOOKA CYSTAL "INVESTMENT". (I purchased this lot as one of my first couple of shipments from my mate in Australia in May of 1966). An 88.5 ct solid fire, no skin or potch and a constant 7 to 8 mm THICK. It broke into 3 pieces along fracture lines that were there for eons. I was in the process of readying it to carve into a Dragon and cutting out those 3 fractures. These 3 pieces are still massive and SOLID FIRE
At that point I realized I'd have to live to 110 years old to cut all of this so enjoy the shot you have, My loss, Your gain.

You'll never guess what I've been up to over the last 3 months.  I've been away!!!  I got a new pair of glasses which led to upgrading my lapidary equipment to be able to supply you with opal polished to 50,000 mesh.  So I've gone back and re-polished much of the OLD GEMS I've cut since the 1960's.  Also, you remember that large lot of Mintabie rough I bought from Patsey and Dan Tucker all those decades ago and forgot about??  Well I've taken time to cut 50 or so of the most promising and have some "unique" black crystal and solid black Mintabie including some N1 and N2 solid and crystal with that ever so rare "red on black" black Mintabie, the one that's so rare because about 98% of these gems come out of Lightning Ridge leaving the remaining 2% from the rest of the worlds opal fields, out of which Mintabie is only a drop in that 2% bucket.  Rarer than most diamonds and I've got 'em and keep watching I'll be putting them on starting with some rare and unusual black crystal with wild and beautiful crystal colors, bright greens and blue, red and flame orange and yellow.  And also some black Mintabie crystal with beauriful colors and UNIQUE black veins descretly runnig within, seemingly supplying black life blood to these rare, old opals that have been out of the mines for decades curing into the most stable and dependable opal in the world and at no reserve and low starting bids.

My Andamooka crystal opal came out in late 1960's and 1970's.  Andamooka was a world class crystal opal supplier from the 1920's but now produces mostly matrix opal.  This crystal material is rare in the fact that its only available in small amounts from people that have hung onto it for years and are willing to part with some.

I use several light sources including sunshine, when available, 60w low light and indirect, florescence full spectrum, penlight etc, so you'll see some difference in the individual picture base colors to best bring out the natural color in the opal.  I do NOT pump the colors even tho it's very difficult to photograph opal and show all the beautiful color and nuance.  Most of the rough opal is photographed wet and the polished opal is dry, but it's actually brighter and more beautiful in person than the pictures show.
