This is a positively enormous Mexican precious crystal "fire" opal from the famed Queretaro locality. Stones the size and quality of this piece are extremely hard to find and with drastically declining mining activity in recent years, the minute number of them found have gotten extremely expensive. This type of opal is cut from irregular shaped pieces of opal that are found in dynamited rhyolite and finding a chunk of rough large enough to cut a cab like this with even color, saturation and no faults or flaws is a very rare occurrence. The rough from which this stone was cut weighed more than 230 carats and only 18 carats (3 stones) were able to be cut from it. The base of this stone is evenly lightly silky with a warm, almost glowing golden-orange base color. The opal shows medium to high intensity precious color in pastels and it shows INTENSE neon colorplay in bright sunlight, especially contra-luz, where light passes into the stone from the side. This opal would make an extremely impressive bezel mounted ring and it would be perfectly durable and stable for everyday wear. It could easily be creatively or simply set into a piece of jewelry that would cause anyone that sees it to ask about it. This is the sort of opal that collectors everywhere dream of having and most museums lack such a high end piece in their collections. It is a truly remarkable piece that is quite likely to increase significantly in value. The gem is a nice oval shape with a medium-high profile and medium dome on the face.
