About this item specifically~ This is a VERY rare and nearly impossible to find variety of opal that will make even seasoned opal collectors envious. This is a variety of blue opal that is found in Guerrero, Mexico at the Buena Vista de Cuellar locality. It is somewhat similar to the blue opal varieties found in Arizona and Nevada but this material has a deeper blue color and it shows a very bold dark metallic green, blue and red colorplay. This locality is unfit for commercial mining and the opal from this site has made nearly no appearances except to the most persistent and patient collectors for many years. The opal is extremely hard and seems somewhat brittle and so rare that we would not consider trying to cut this unique specimen. It is an outstanding investment quality piece and was acquired from a very old collection. The piece offered here is ready for display and quite striking.
