About this item specifically~ WOW! This is a very rare and never seen on the market piece of Mexico's finest opal. This material is EXTREMELY rare in this size without flaws or matrix somewhere within. This particular stone has magnificent yellow-green-orange-red fire throughout and from any angle. It is "face-up" color and reflected light (no matter how low the light may be) is what causes the color in this piece. It is not contra-luz fire that only shows when the stone is lit from behind or the side so this piece is an excellent candidate for world-class jewelry. It would make an incredible men's ring thanks to the size and type of opal it is. The gem is very durable and has no problems at all. It is cut to a very even and attractive medium-high dome and the base material is a medium orange-amber color with typical even silkiness that gives the stone a pearlescent sheen. This investment grade opal weighs about 6.7 carats and measures about 15mmx11.5mmx7mm and is priced to steal at just under $200 per carat~just $1288~

This gem was cut and polished in our US lapidary from dry and seasoned (mined in 2008, more than one season ago) rough chosen for its stability and long-term investment potential. It has a flawless all-over micropolish and appropriate beveling for a bezel or pronged setting. We generally (unless no ted otherwise) give our opals flat backs to ease in proper setting and do not leave bulk or extra mass to boost their weight. This is important in well-cut stones to provide room for elements in the setting and still allow the stone to be firmly mounted without further cutting. This is not the only way opals may be cut and of course, there are exceptions. Most custom settings for improperly finished stones are difficult to make and far more expensive than setting flat-backed, beveled stones in a more standard and less expensive format. Having cut many gems that were subsequently set, we have found that a flawless micropolish with a flat back and bevels generally eases in creating spectacular finished jewelry that should last a lifetime and more.
