About this item specifically~ This is a very rare treat for any opal collector interested in building a good collection. Nowak opal comes from a small single source (has been called the "Last Chance Mine") near Mojave, California, USA. It was never a commercially viable source and is no longer found on the market at all. This material formed in an isolated few of the porous spaces (amygdules) in basaltic volcanic vugs and of those, a very very small number show colorplay. You can dig through many pounds of hard, brittle and sharp rock to find one tiny little nodule of this orangy looking material. There are lots of filled voids that contain non-gem whitish or even yellow-orange common opal but it is almost always in tiny pieces and rarely cuttable, even when void of colorplay. To find any colorplay is special but to find one large enough and with consistent colorplay and quality to cut a stone of this large size is extremely rare, indeed. This is by far the largest piece we found in several days worth of wishful, backbreaking searching through a huge quantity of the raw basalt years ago. Finding one like this is like finding a huge gold nugget during several years' worth of metal detecting. This gem has a relatively even-colored semicrystal base with unusually vivid base color and outstanding precious colorplay throughout. This one is one of the tough ones for any collector to acquire these days and the wonderful "wearability" of this piece as a cut and finished example, not to mention the size and quality makes it highly desirable for a discriminating devotee. It was cut in 2009 (after several years of debate) and is truly a priceless rarity you will not see again on the market. It weighs about 1.85 carats and measures about 9.1mm x 7.8mm x 4.2mm aprx. This ExoticOpal is being offered as an exceptional rarity and keystone for a comprehensive collector. It is priced at $2500 per carat~ $4488~
