Description

A large and fine oval opal is offered here. This is an amber honey colored

crystal body tone of N6, a dark opal, formerly known as semi-black.

The play of color is bright and lively. Densely packed medium sized flakes

of every color float throughout the opal body. This gives a gemmy three

dimensional quality to the play of color, with flakes behind flakes, sparkling

away.

Green in shades from teal to kelly to lime green into yellow. Yellow shades

into oranges and red. Many subtle hues are present here which are not

so common in opal display. Salmon pinks and turquoise, with blues in

cobalt and softer shades. There is a strong blue glow to the jelly, more

apparent at some angles.

The camera did not capture the color well, showing only the highlight tips of the

larger color structures in the opal. It is quite colorful in hand, crisp and

glorious in sunshine.

21 mm x 31 mm x 4 mm. this opal weighs 14.3 carats. That's almost three

grams of gem opal.

This opal was cut thirty years ago and is completely stable. It has a pleasing

and regular oval shape. It is very well cut with a buff top and mirror finish on

the face. This quality was not common material then and is almost unheard of these days.

Wholesale value in 1976 was $35 per carat. Today it is closer to one

hundred dollars per carat. Offered now below its original asking price, this is a

remarkable value for an extraordinary opal.
