Description
Welo Top Grade Cutters
28.13 carats, measuring 24 mm x 17 mm x 13 mm
This piece is part of a very special parcel of top grade brightness, rare body tone and highly geometric patterns of opal rough. All of this group are grades above most of what is offered on the internet anywhere today.
This is a white base piece with strong bars of color passing thru it. There are three bars, two go all the way through in the 24 x 17 plane, while one runs out about halfway along the length of the stone. So two, at least, large opals will cut from this piece. There is a convenient white potch section positioned perfectly for sawing the color bars apart. This reminds me of Coober Pedy in that way, with bright bars of color running parallel through a piece of opal. I can see red in all three of the bars, with all the secondary colors.
Welo opal has hydrophane properties and will absorb water. Wetting it will cause it to gain weight and will affect both the body tone and color display. This rough has not been watered for weight or extra brightness, No treatments of any kind. Pictures are all taken dry, mostly in sunshine or bright overcast. It's been a rainy summer.
